European Heritage Days at the Museum of African Art

The Museum of African Art (MAU) is taking part in the European Heritage Days event again this year, with a programme from 1 to 8 October dedicated to the preservation, transmission, and reinterpretation of cultural heritage in contemporary society.

Through discussions, lectures, and a film screening, the programme will cover themes of ecology and sustainability, African art, oral tradition, and cultural memory, as well as the ties between the former Yugoslavia and African countries.

The programme kicks off on 1 October at 6 pm with the discussion “Reci: AkciJA” (Say: Action), the final accompanying event of the exhibition “Reci: Art – Waste as a Resource”. The discussion will focus on local initiatives that transform waste into new and useful products, encouraging a more responsible approach to the environment.

A day later, on 2 October, Prof. Dr Agnieszka Kluczewska-Wójcik will deliver a lecture titled “Reinterpreting Tradition: From Négritude to Contemporary African Art”, which will explore the connections between cultural heritage, identity, and contemporary artistic practices. The lecture will be held in English, supported by the Polish Institute in Belgrade.

Two events will be dedicated to oral heritage and its place in modern society. On 6 October, Rahul Kiago from Kenya will speak about the art of storytelling and the preservation of Kenyan heritage, alongside a performance of a traditional story.

A day later, on 7 October, Sekou Sidi Diawara from Mali will present the role of the djeli (griot) – custodians of collective memory and oral tradition in Mandinka society.

European Heritage Days at the MAU will conclude on 8 October at 6 pm with a screening of the 1985 film The Time of the Leopards by Zdravko Velimirović. It is a joint Yugoslav–Mozambican production, often cited as the first feature-length fiction film from Mozambique.

Throughout the festival, visitors will also be able to explore the thematic exhibition “Reci: Art – Waste as a Resource”, which has been extended until 11 October. The European Heritage Days programme therefore offers one of the last opportunities to visit the exhibition and its side events in the museum garden.

Admission to all European Heritage Days events is free.
