Work safety: New first aid regulation in force

All companies in Serbia are given a two-year-deadline to train their employees in administering first aid. They are also required to get first aid cabinets for their companies immediately. These are just some of the stipulations in the Code of Conduct for Providing First Aid in Workplace, which came into force recently.

The new Code of Conduct stipulates that companies have to be able to administer first aid, train several of their employees for this, and acquire both the means and equipment for first aid in accordance with the perceived risk in the workplace, technological process, organization, nature and volume of work, number of employees, number of remote offices, frequency of work-related injuries and the proximity to the nearest medical facility.

The first aid kit has to be easily available to every single employee during working hours, in all shifts and in all locations. Even if paramedics are called to intervene, the company has to ensure that first aid is administered before they come.

All management has to be trained in administering first aid, as well as at least 2% of the workforce in one shift or remote office. Employer has to make sure that at least one worker per shift or in remote office is properly trained to give first aid.

Employees have to be informed who is the designated person for administering first aid. Each first aid kit has to include gauze pads, sterile gauze, calico bandages, adhesive plaster on the reel and the adhesive patch with a pad, triangle scarf, safety needles, scissors with rounded tips, disposable gloves, cotton swabs, non-iodized antiseptic and the list specifying the contents of each first aid kit. The first aid kit can be located in a wall cabinet or a portable bag (for on-location administration of first aid). Companies should have one first aid cabinet or first aid bag per up to 20 employees.
