In Serbia, a total of 508,975 pupils attended elementary schools, of which 457,652 were in main classes and 51,323 were in separate classes, according to the data collated by the State Statistics Office for the school year 2020/2021.
As far as high school education goes, in the same school year, 246,638 students attended classes in 518 regular high schools, of which 122,365 girls (49.6 percent) and 124,273 boys (50.4 percent).
Gender-wise, 58.3 percent of girls completed a four-year vocational high school, 31.5 percent a high school, and only 10.2 percent three-year vocational high school.
A large percentage of boys have completed a four-year vocational high school (about 56.7 percent), 20.8 percent and 22.5 percent three-year vocational high school.
Statistics show that young people most often graduate from schools in the fields of economics, law and administration (12.1 percent), electrical engineering (11.4 percent), health and social protection (9.7 percent), mechanical engineering and metal processing (9.2 percent) and retail trade, hospitality and tourism (8.5 percent).
Girls were mostly interested in economics (16.5 percent), health care (15 percent) and retail trade, hospitality and tourism (9.2 percent), while the majority of boys completed high school education related to electrical engineering (20.7 percent), mechanical engineering and metalworking (15.9 percent), retail trade, catering and tourism (7.9 percent) and economics, law and administration (7.6).
