When will roaming between Serbia and the EU be abolished?

The Director General of Telekom Srbija, Vladimir Lučić, stated today that it is realistic to expect roaming charges between Serbia and the European Union to be abolished by the end of this year or at the beginning of 2027.

He noted that the European Commission must first sign agreements with the countries of the Western Balkans, after which the roaming rules will need to be incorporated into national legislation in order to become mandatory for all operators.

Lučić explained that the Roam Like at Home regime means that users will be able to use the mobile package they have in their home country while travelling anywhere within the EU, without paying higher tariffs.

He added that this arrangement has been in force across Europe since 2017, initially covering EU member states as well as Liechtenstein and Norway, and was later extended to Ukraine and Moldova.

“The Western Balkan countries are the only ones remaining. The European Commission now needs to conclude bilateral agreements with each country, which I hope will happen quickly. Once the agreements are signed, the roaming rules must be incorporated into legislation. Our country is ready for that, and they must become part of the law in order to be binding on every operator,” Lučić told RTS.

He added that all operators across Europe already provide this service, while the region currently has a smaller roaming-free zone covering the Western Balkan countries.

Lučić stressed that the abolition of roaming charges will apply to all users and to all operator packages.

“This means that whatever package a customer has in Serbia, they will be able to use it anywhere, and that package will effectively behave as if they were at home. If, for example, you have a 1 GB package in Serbia, you will be able to use it anywhere under the same pricing conditions, and you will not have to worry about connecting to a different operator while abroad. That is why this service is beneficial: all operators in Europe are legally obliged to apply it to all operators within the roaming zone,” Lučić explained.
