In 2023, a total of 97,081 people in Serbia died due to severe illnesses and injuries.
Nearly every second person in Serbia died from heart and vascular diseases (49.7%), one in five (20.9%) from malignant tumors, and one in thirteen from complications related to diabetes (2.9%), injuries (2.4%), and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (2.4%), according to the latest Health-Statistical Yearbook of Serbia published by the Dr Milan Jovanović Batut Public Health Institute.
The same data reveals that from 2014 to 2023, the overall mortality rate in Serbia increased by 3.2%.
During the same period, mortality rates from diabetes increased by 19.9%, and from malignant tumors by 2.3%.
On the other hand, there was a notable decrease in mortality rates from injuries and poisoning (21.8%), heart and vascular diseases (3.7%), and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (1.1%).
The leading causes of death in Serbia in 2023 were heart and vascular diseases and malignant tumors, which accounted for more than two-thirds (70.6%) of all deaths. Heart and circulatory system diseases alone were responsible for almost half (49.7%) of all deaths.
“Heart and vascular diseases are the leading cause of death, with a higher percentage of women dying from these conditions compared to men. Mortality from these diseases has slightly increased during the observed period. Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) represents a significant health issue, accounting for 49.0% of all deaths from ischemic heart diseases in 2023,” the yearbook states.
As for malignant tumors, there has been a slight decline in mortality rates, but the incidence rates continue to rise, placing a significant burden on the population of Serbia.
“Diabetes is a global epidemic, and it is estimated that around 600,000 people in Serbia, or 8.1% of the population, suffer from diabetes. Type 2 diabetes accounts for 95% of all cases,” the yearbook reports.
