Vučić:”Elections after summer”

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced last night that elections in Serbia will be held sometime between the end of September and mid-November.

“We will invite them to dialogue, but they will not accept because they do not have a single argument. What would they even talk about? They cannot talk about Kosovo and Metohija, nor about sanctions against Russia, nor about building anything. I invite them to talks, with cameras or without, however they want, just let them come. I will always fight for a united Serbia, but that does not mean there will be ideological uniformity. Serbia will be united, it will be clear who has the majority; their plan and programme is to kill us, purge us and so on, while ours is for Serbia to develop and become modern. It is crystal clear. I will always respect people who have the energy to fight for something. And I call on people to vote for students, because we will have many students with us, while they will not have a single student,” Vučić said.

“The one with the majority implements the plan and programme”

Vučić said he respects every political opponent and that he would continue inviting the protesting students to dialogue, although, as he claims, they will not accept.

Speaking to Radio Television of Serbia, Vučić said that if another electoral list were to win, he would recognise the election results.

“I will fight for a united Serbia, but that does not mean there will be one way of thinking. It means it will be clear who has the majority, and that side implements its plan and programme,” Vučić said.

He stated that his goal is for Serbia to be built up, developed and modernised.

“That will not change my political opinion of them or what they would do to the country, but I know that dialogue is an essential necessity. Back when we were in opposition, the SPS would have a stand, the SPO would have a stand, the Democrats would have a stand, and then we would come with our own stand in Zemun in front of the department store. I used to visit all the stands, shake hands with everyone, buy soft drinks for everyone. Some would look at you sideways, others differently, but everyone shook hands, everyone stood there normally, doing their job,” he added.

Asked whether he would now visit opposition stands and shake hands with everyone, he said he would have no problem with that. “Just do not be offended, but I fear they would, not to say pull out guns and knives, as they did against their own political opponents in Bajina Bašta and here in front of the National Assembly, where one man was shot. The opposite never happened,” he said.

“The students will not agree to dialogue”

He stressed that the gatherings of students participating in the blockades were illegal and unregistered.

“They are occupying our roads, our motorways, our streets. They engage in violence all the time. They attack people going about their business, people taking their mothers, wives, and children to the doctor, people simply trying to buy something for themselves,” Vučić said and added that the students would not agree to dialogue for two reasons: first, because they do not have a single argument, and second, because they are incapable of extending a hand to anyone.

“They attacked their own representatives because they shook hands with Ana Brnabić. They are incapable of extending a hand to anyone. These people threaten that we will ‘go swimming’, that they will kill people. That is not Serbia’s future. Serbia’s future lies in dialogue. I invite them – let four or five of them come, let us meet in your studio and talk. Just give me the same amount of time as them. Not a second more. I will fight and show the people what the real arguments are. I invite them to talks without cameras, with cameras, however they want, wherever they want, just let them come and talk,” Vučić said.

“I call on citizens to vote for students”

He called on citizens to vote for students, stating that students would appear on the list of the Serbian Progressive Party, while there would be no students on the “blockaders’” list. “We will have many students with us, and I call on people to vote for good, intelligent, serious, educated and learned students – for young people who are the future – because those others will not have such young people,” President Vučić concluded.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić had previously mentioned 12 July as a possible election date, adding that the timing would largely depend on global developments. “Everything will happen within the next six and a half months at the latest, and perhaps even within two and a half months,” Vučić said earlier.

Who will be on the opposition’s electoral lists?

As things currently stand, it appears certain that the opposition will run in several separate blocs at the elections:

* A student list

* The pro-European opposition, with whom the students have repeatedly refused cooperation

* A right-wing bloc consisting of the movement led by Branimir Nestorović and the People’s Party

* The New Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS)

What remains unclear is whether the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) will contest the elections together or separately, although it is very likely they will form a coalition.
