The pear brandy (rakija) Nirvana, produced by the Serbian distillery Zaric, has been declared one of the ten best alcoholic drinks in the world at Concours Mondial de Bruxelles Spirits Selection.
The competition included 1,400 spirits from 84 countries, which competed for the silver and the gold medal, and the Grand Prix in Brussels.
Nirvana is made from the Williams pear variety and is rested for at least two years in stainless steel vats, preserving the sophisticated, intense flavour of the fruit.

Other Serbian fruit brandies also won gold medals: the apricot brandy by Hubert 1924 and the raspberry brandy Opsesija by the Zaric distillery. The quince brandy by Stara Pesma won a silver medal.
This year, China had the biggest number of competitors, as much as 23%, followed by France, Mexico, Brazil and Italy. The Chinese competed with the drink called baijiu, followed by rum and cachaca, brandy and gin. The samples were rated by a panel of 60 judges, who came mostly from Europe this year due to the difficulties related to intercontinental travel.
