At a meeting with the Serbian president, Aleksandar Vucic, a US Congressman, Eliot Engel, said that all misunderstandings and hostilities in the Western Balkans should be overcome and that the countries should cooperate to become the European Union members thus creating a better life for their citizens, the FoNet news agency reported.
Engel, the Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, said the US wanted to make the Belgrade – Pristina dialogue on the normalization of relations easier and that Washington was acting in a friendly manner towards both sides.
Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic said he hoped that Eliot’s message to Pristina would contribute to creating conditions for the continuation of the dialogue.
President Vucic added that other topics were also discussed – from the case of the Bytyqi brothers to the NATO aggression and that Engel told him that the fact he was a great friend of Albanians did not mean he would not like to be the friend of Serbs as well.
Engel, a Democrat from New York, is known as one of the most active Albanian lobbyists in Washington.
In March 2017, Engel confirmed at the meeting of the Congressional Foreign Affairs Committee that the United States was opposed to the formation of the Kosovo Army and asked for that position to be changed as soon as possible. He estimated that Kosovo should have an army, arguing that Russia is arming Belgrade. Engel said that Kosovo, although “a free and independent country for nine years,” has no army, and called on the United States to stay with Kosovo.
