Serbian President, Aleksandar Vucic met yesterday with the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres to discuss several topics, including Kosovo.
“Western countries do not want to talk about to whom Kosovo belongs because they consider this a done deal. Starting new narratives on this topic is considered as opening of Pandora’s box”, said Serbian President. He added that official Belgrade was not only negotiating with the Albanians, but also with those parties that created the independent state of Kosovo. He explained that during his stay in America he had a lot of in-depth conversations with such decision makers.
“It seems to me that will not back down from the principle of respecting and preserving the independence of Kosovo, which is very difficult for us,” the president said for Radio Television of Serbia, following his meeting with the UN Secretary General Antoniou Guterres yesterday.
Vucic also said that he would do his best to protect the interests of Serbia and to do whatever he could to get the country out of the current position which was a result of irresponsible decisions. He added that he was not particularly pleased with the results of the talks in the US, and that he expected more understanding not only for the Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija, but also for Serbia proper. Nevertheless, he stressed that he was satisfied with the efforts and work of Serbia.
The Serbian President conveyed to the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres that Serbia was ready for a compromise, but would not sacrifice its interests.
“That was after three days of very difficult meetings, which I am not at liberty to talk in detail about. In order to prepare a platform for our citizens, I had to get the support of the international community. It was a disappointment for me. But we have to continue with our fight. When you behave in a responsible manner, the result will come”, Vucic explained.
Vucic said that he never attended “secret” dinners with Kosovo President Hashim Thaci, but added that he would “agree” with Kosovo Albanians more easily than with representatives of the international community. “It is easier for Serbia to negotiate with Thaci, but no one would allow it. I would love to have the opportunity for the Serbs and the Albanians to talk, we would solve our problems much quicker that way”, Vucic added.
