The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, has officially called snap parliamentary elections for 25 October, as previously announced.
“The past few years have been full of challenges. Serbia has been through a difficult period. The order established after the Second World War has broken down. Today, we have wars in regions across the world that threaten our country not only in terms of security, but economically as well. Through all of this, we have managed to maintain peace and stability. Serbia has managed to be the fastest-growing economy in Europe this year, despite all the obstacles. You achieved this – the citizens of Serbia,” the President declared.
Vučić stated that the unrest and riots in Serbia over the past two years were not merely the result of conflicts between political opponents. He emphasised that he had repeatedly invited his political opponents to engage in dialogue, adding, however, that it is impossible to talk with those who dehumanise the other side. Vučić stated that throughout his mandate he had always worked in the country’s best interests, and that these elections were a consequence of heightened tensions, noting that any further delay would cause more harm.
“Democracy is the best form of political system; nothing better has been invented. You will have the opportunity to choose from numerous options, and I urge you to ensure that election day, as well as the campaign itself, passes off peacefully, and that you respect civil liberties. The decision of the people must be respected,” Vučić said, adding that the objective was to preserve democracy.
The President also officially dissolved the National Assembly and announced the extraordinary parliamentary elections.
As a reminder, since the start of the year, the President has publicly announced, mentioned, or shifted the deadlines for holding snap parliamentary elections more than ten times. Exactly one week ago, Radio Television of Serbia reported that snap parliamentary elections would be called for 25 October.
