Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said that, “as things stand,” parliamentary elections in Serbia will be held on October 18 or 25. “We will know in a few days”, Vučić told Radio-Television Serbia (RTS).
Vučić had previously announced that presidential elections would be held after the early parliamentary elections, mentioning the end of December, January or early February 2027 as possible dates.
He had also announced that he would resign from the presidency and that he could potentially be the prime ministerial candidate of the “United Serbia” list representing the parties currently in power.
Asked about the decision of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) to run independently in the elections, he said he did not want to deny anyone the right to stand for election.
Commenting on criticism over the number of citizenships granted and the possibility that this could affect the election results, Vučić said that 4,168 citizenships had been registered this year, while the highest number during the current government was recorded in 2022, at 29,000. He added that, according to him, as many as 100,000 citizenships were registered annually during the 2000s. According to Vučić, 713,739 citizenships were registered between 2000 and 2012, while since 2012, when his party came to power, three times fewer have been registered, or 292,000. “Here, it is not 292,000 people who will vote, but only 80,000. That is an absolutely minimal number, and this is all based on a law introduced by those who came before us. For us, democratic elections are of crucial importance; we have no problem with whom the people choose to place their trust in”, Vučić said.
He also addressed the postponement of the introduction of new voting booths at polling stations, noting that the ODIHR had criticized Serbia eight times between 2012 and 2024 for not having voting booths, while now, when Serbia is introducing them, criticism has emerged that the authorities will use them to “rig the elections”. “How? Because we will protect the secrecy and the right of every person to vote freely? This is how people vote in France, Italy, Germany and every developed country. Whatever you do, they have to say that you are preparing for something because they think something is going to happen a day or two later. These are fairy tales for little children. Nothing will happen – Vučić said.
He said that the list “to which he will belong” would fight to win a majority of the vote, and that it would not have a majority in parliament unless it secured 126 seats.
Vučić also announced the opening of a robot factory on August 29 in Šabac, as well as the opening in Inđija of a factory by a Chinese company that produces batteries for drones, unmanned vehicles, robots and household appliances. The investment, he added, will amount to €100.5 million, and the factory will employ 150 people. “We will sign the first framework agreement at the end of August, and construction of the factory in Inđija will begin as early as the end of October”, Vučić said.
