Vladimir Orlić elected new National Parliament Speker

An MP from the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), Vladimir Orlic, was elected parliament speaker in an open ballot, with 154 votes in favor and 76 opposed.

In his first address after the election for parliament speaker, Orlic said that he will be a speaker to all MPs and that he will continue to pursue the state policy that the citizens voted for in the elections. He thanked his Serbian Progressive Party and all his associates who supported him.

Nikola Selaković, an official of the SNS party, explained Orlić’s appointment as an SNS’ aspiration to ‘rejuvenate’ the leadership of the Parliament, as Orlić is not even 40 years old.

“For those who know him well, Orlić is, first and foremost, a good man,” Marijan Risticevic, an MP from the SNS, tells the BBC and adds: “His education, firmness, balance…you have to have a mental balance to do this job.”

“Orlić has an excellent professional biography,” Zoran Lutovac, president of the opposition Democratic Party and member of the Serbian parliament, says instead. “But that’s where I draw the line,” he added.

When Vladimir Orlić joined the Serbian Progressive Party in 2008, he was 25 years old and just started a scientific career.

His party colleague Nikola Selaković particularly underlines the scientific achievements of the new parliament speaker.

“This is a man who, in the meantime, graduated from the Mathematical Lyceum and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Belgrade, where he earned his doctorate,” Selaković said.

Orlić was born in Belgrade. After graduating the Mathematics High School and getting his university degree, he got his doctorate from the Department of Telecommunications and Information Technology. He has been a research and development engineer in various scientific institutes and has also worked in several private companies.
