Vernetti: Kragujevac is the right choice for Fiat

Director General of Fiat Chrysler Automobili Srbija (FCA Serbia), Silvia Vernetti talks about the most successful Serbian export product, the new brand and the cooperation with the local community.

The automobile giant Fiat Chrysler is happy with its cooperation with the Serbian government, and the best result of this cooperation is the most successful Serbian export product – Fiat 500L, says Director General of Fiat Chrysler Automobili Srbija, Silvia Vernetti in her interview for the Vecernje Novosti daily.

She was appointed head of the Kragujevac factory on 1st May, 2014, and this is her first interview for a Serbian media outlet.

*How satisfied are you with Fiat’s factory in Kragujevac?

– We have started this joint venture project nine years ago when the factory in Kragujevac was built. Five years ago, we started manufacturing Fiat 500L, which remains the bestselling car in its segment in Europe and the bestselling car in Serbia. We are proud of the fact that such a good product originates from Kragujevac and we are, first and foremost, thankful to our employees for their dedication.

* Are you happy with the accomplished business results?

 – We are proud of the fact that FCA Serbia’s share in the national GDP is 3%, which is also something that the Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic mentioned recently in Kragujevac when, together with the CEO of Fiat Chrysler for the EMEA region, Alfredo Altavilla, he officially launched the beginning of production. Our share in total exports is 8% which, in 2016, amounted to 1.1 billion EUR.

* Tell us something about the new model Fiat 500L after its first test drive.

 – Our new model has over 40% of original parts. We have significantly improved it, not only in terms of design, but also in terms of improved performances and safety. I expect this model to follow in the successful footsteps of its predecessor.

*The sale of the new Fiat 500L in France, Italy and Serbia will start on 17th and 18th June, while the car will be available for purchase in other European countries in September. Are you planning on exporting it to the USA?

– Of course. Our plan is to sell this car in every single country that Fiat has been exporting to so far. However, I cannot tell you at the moment how much is Fiat 500L going to cost in Serbia.

* You often say that you are proud of the cooperation between Fiat and the local community in Kragujevac. Could you elaborate?

 – Our priority is for all of our employees to still feel privileged about working in our company. We pay special attention to work safety, employee training and the cooperation with the local community. We have implemented several projects so far with children and women in mind.

* You have been living in Serbia since 2014. What are your impressions of the country so far?

 – Coming to Serbia was a great professional challenge for me, but also a pleasure. We have managed to reach high levels in all of our factory’s segments, and I see the investment in our newest model as a great investment in the future.
