Verdi and humanitarian mission of the Order of Malta in Belgrade

The Day of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, was celebrated in Belgrade with an evening of great music and a charity event.

The Belgrade National Theatre played host to Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata, directed by maestro Dejan Savic with the extraordinary performances by soprano Claire Coolen in the role of Violetta, and baritone Alberto Gazale as Giorgio Germont.

Ambassador Alberto di Luca welcomed the Serbian Minister of Culture, Vladan Vukosavljevic, Prince Aleksandar Karadjordjevic and his wife, numerous diplomats as well as friends and supporters of the charity work involving the sick and the needy which is something that this Order, founded in Jerusalem by priest Gerardo da Amalfi, has been recognized by for almost nine centuries.

The Order of Hospitallers of Malta is known in Serbia for the Make a Wish project, which provides an opportunity for all the people in need of urgent and complex surgical interventions to have the Order cover their medical costs because these interventions are often performed by specialized surgeons from abroad.
