The Serbian Blood Transfusion Institute has issued an appeal to all healthy citizens between 18 and 65 years of age to respond to the call and donate blood, because blood reserves have been drastically reduced and blood of all blood groups is urgently needed, with the need constantly increasing, reports Tanjug news agency.
At the moment, the Serbian Blood Transfusion Institute has enough blood reserves to last just one day.
Due to the autumn school holidays and the upcoming national holiday on 11 November, a weaker response from voluntary blood donors is expected.
As pointed out, the poor epidemiological situation also affects the decline in the number of donors. The minimum weekly blood requirement is 1,500 units of blood, and the Institute collects on average 70% of that requirement, which is not enough to treat all the sick and injured people in the health facilities to which the Institute provides blood.
If sufficient quantities of blood are not collected, there is a possibility that surgeries will be postponed, the press release states. The Transfusion Institute is open every weekday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday 11 November and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The timetable of the mobile teams who collect blood in the field is available on the website www.nbti.org.rs .
