Tomislav Nikolic has decided to run for Serbian president – N1 reports, citing its sources. Also, Sputnik News reported the news about Nikolic’s candidacy which comes in the wake of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) deciding in favour of Aleksandar Vucic being the party’s official presidential candidate.
The current Serbian president has made a decision to run for president again tonight, at the celebration of his 65th birthday. Nikolic said earlier that he „wasn’t surprised with the results of voting“ in his party which decided to nominate Vucic as its official presidential candidate.
When asked by the reporters to comment on the media reports that his own son supported Vucic’s presidential nomination, all Nikolic said was that his son Radomir „stated his opinion at the preliminary meeting“.
To remind, the Serbian Progressive Party unanimously chose Aleksandar Vucic as its presidential candidate on Tuesday. „The President of the Serbian Progressive Party, Aleksandar Vucic undertakes to continue talks with the current President of the State, Tomislav Nikolic in best faith, while trying to secure complete state unity between all political stakeholders in the Republic of Serbia with the view of defending Serbia from the powers of the past and securing its further progress“, the party’s press release reads.
It is interesting to note that, at today’s official reception apropos Serbia’s Statehood Day, there was no government ministers in attendance whatsoever, while the Serbian PM, Aleksandar Vucic left the reception immediately after Nikolic’s speech. He did have a cordial conversation with Nikolic at the reception, calling Nikolic’s speech „excellent“ and „fitting of this solemn moment“.
