The University Children’s Hospital “Tiršova 2”, currently under construction on Deligradska Street in Belgrade, will be one of the most modern hospitals in the region. The new 11-storey building will cover more than 65,000 square metres. It is one of the state’s largest investments, worth 15 billion dinars.
Dr Siniša Dučić, director of the University Children’s Hospital in Tiršova, says he is happy to see the progress being made on the construction. “I have to tell you that I’m really happy that, hopefully, sometime next year, we will have the opportunity to move to Tiršova 2,” Dr Dučić said. The modern building, Dučić noted, will have state-of-the-art equipment, the best-equipped patient rooms, operating theatres and diagnostic facilities. “So we are expecting 21st-century medicine in the truest sense of the word,” the director of the University Children’s Hospital in Tiršova stressed.
Ten operating theatres and state-of-the-art diagnostics
The institution, which recently celebrated its centenary, is the only one where, among other procedures, kidney transplants are performed on children and a dialysis programme is provided, treating thousands of young patients every year. The new Tiršova 2 will also perform bone marrow transplants.
Tiršova 2 will have 10 state-of-the-art operating theatres on the first floor and a green roof covering more than 3,000 square metres. It will also have single-occupancy rooms, with the possibility of expanding the facility, and up to 300 beds in total.
“Here we will have a sterile room for burn patients and a sterile room for treating immunocompromised patients; we did not have the technical conditions to provide these at Tiršova 1. The rooms will follow a modern concept, all diagnostics will be located in one place, and there will be a large number of day hospitals, meaning that many conditions can be treated without the child having to stay in hospital,” said Dr Dučić, director of the University Children’s Hospital.
Tiršova 2 has been long awaited, but everyone involved in the implementation of this major state project says it will be the most modern paediatric healthcare facility in the country. The new hospital will be accessible from three directions, including via the motorway, and 587 parking spaces will be available. “It covers around 65,500 square metres and will enable the complete treatment of patients. At this point, €150 million has already been invested in the building itself, not including the equipment that is yet to be installed, which will be top-of-the-line, just like the building itself. Everything that currently exists anywhere in the world has been incorporated into its design,” said Rade Belaćević of the Ministry of Public Investments.
Construction to be completed by mid-next year
The ground floor of Tiršova 2 will house the main entrance, emergency department and day hospitals. “Above us there are another five floors, plus a technical floor, while below us there are another five floors. Construction and finishing and installation works are currently underway. The building is slowly taking shape, the façade is nearing completion, the rooms have been formed, installations are being fitted into the walls and ceilings, and the walls are being closed up. Preparations are also underway for the start of the final works on wall and floor coverings, suspended ceilings, and the installation of windows and doors,” said Marko Krsmanović of SMB Gradnja, head of the Tiršova 2 construction site.
Due to the high temperatures in the previous period, the works were more difficult, and a significant amount of work was also carried out at night. Around 300 workers are present at the construction site at any given time. If necessary, there will be even more workers to ensure that everything is completed without delays, by the middle of next year.
From Tiršova 2, workers can also see the reconstruction and expansion of the Clinic for Gynaecology and Obstetrics in Višegradska, which will receive a completely new look for the first time since its establishment more than 100 years ago.
