The United States remains absolutely committed to helping the Western Balkan countries finalize their European integration process, the U.S. State Department said.
“Unjustified and unprovoked, Russia’s war against Ukraine clearly indicates the growing urgency of this task for the transatlantic alliance,” the U.S. State Department said Monday, reports Tanjug.
Asked about the possible spillover of the crisis in the Balkans, an anonymous State Department spokesman said that Russia is a destabilizing factor in the Western Balkans. U.S. Congressmen, 19 of them, signed a letter last week urging the Biden administration to increase diplomatic engagement in the Western Balkans in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
In a letter to U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, the signatories called for redoubled efforts to consolidate democracy and promote the integration of the Western Balkans into the EU.
