The RTS Big Band and American jazz pianist Danny Grissett will perform on 25 March at 8 pm in the Great Hall of the Kolarac Endowment.
The Kolarac Endowment and the United States Embassy in Belgrade are presenting the gala concert Freedom 250 to mark 250 years since the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence on 4 July 1776 in Philadelphia.
Danny Grissett (born in 1975) is an American jazz pianist, keyboardist and composer. Born in Los Angeles, he first played the piano at the age of five, taking classical music lessons. He graduated in music education from California State University, Dominguez Hills, and then completed a two-year Master’s degree in jazz performance in 2000 at the California Institute of the Arts, after which he studied at the Thelonious Monk Institute at the Thornton School of Music, University of Southern California.
After performing in Los Angeles, he moved to New York in 2003, and the following year became the keyboardist in the band of trumpeter Nicholas Payton. Since 2005 he has been a permanent member of the band of trumpeter Tom Harrell. In 2006 Grissett released Promise, his first album as a bandleader; his next album, Encounters, featured trio recordings with bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Kendrick Scott. His subsequent album, Form, released in 2008, added horn players to the trio – saxophonist Seamus Blake, trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire and trombonist Steve Davis.
In 2010, a reviewer for DownBeat magazine commented that Grissett employed “strategies drawn from Mulgrew Miller, Herbie Hancock and Sonny Clark to tell compelling stories bearing his own harmonic and rhythmic signature.”
Grissett has previously performed with the RTS Big Band on the main stage of the Kolarac Endowment in 2016 as a special guest at the concert Left Side of Life.
