The opera Eugene Onegin opening the new season of the Blue Hall

With the performance of one of the world’s most beloved operas, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, the third season of the Sava Centre’s Blue Hall opens on 5 September. Performed for the first time on this stage, the piece is brought to life by the ensemble of the National Theatre in Belgrade, directed by Mario Pavle del Monaco.

Based on Alexander Pushkin’s novel in verse of the same name, the opera Eugene Onegin has captivated audiences worldwide for over a century. Tchaikovsky described it as “lyrical scenes”, creating an intimate story of love, missed opportunities, maturing, and regret – themes that resonate just as powerfully with audiences today.

At the heart of the story is Tatyana, a young girl whose sincere love for Eugene Onegin remains unrequited. Her famous love letter, Onegin’s rejection, the fatal duel, and their reunion years later form the backbone of one of the most poignant love stories in world literature and opera – a story of a love that comes too late to alter fate.
