The National Stadium rail station will be state-of-the-art

The future National Stadium railway station complex, which will serve as the terminus of the first phase of the new railway line from Zemun Polje to Surčin, is entering the environmental impact assessment process.

The Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure has submitted a request to the Ministry of Environmental Protection to determine whether an environmental impact assessment is required for the first phase of construction.

The project includes the construction of the station, an underground pedestrian passage, platforms with canopies, and associated infrastructure. The estimated value of the investment is 293 million dinars, or approximately €2.5 million.

According to the project documentation prepared by VS Infra Design, the station will form part of a future double-track electrified railway connection linking Zemun Polje, Nikola Tesla Airport, Surčin, the National Stadium, and eventually Obrenovac.

First phase of construction

During the first phase, the section from Zemun Polje to the National Stadium will be built, including the Singidunum, Airport and Surčin stations. The second phase will extend the railway line to Obrenovac.

The central element of the complex will be the station building, consisting of a basement and ground floor, with a gross floor area of 715 square metres. The building will include a waiting room, ticket office, information desk, sanitary facilities, a baby-changing room and staff offices.

Special attention has been paid to accessibility, with plans for lifts, tactile paving for visually impaired passengers and toilets adapted for people with disabilities.

The station will feature two platforms connected by an underground passage measuring 9.35 metres wide, allowing passengers both to access the platforms and to reach future facilities around the National Stadium on foot. The passage will be equipped with staircases and lifts and illuminated by a circular glass lantern.

One notable feature of the project is the inclusion of green roofs on both the station building and the signalling and telecommunications equipment building. The roofs will be partly flat and partly terraced towards the surrounding plazas, incorporating planters and seating areas.

The complex will also include 25 parking spaces, two of which will be reserved for people with disabilities. The area around the station will feature more than 9,800 square metres of landscaped green space, including lawns, trees and shrubs.

The total gross floor area of all buildings within the complex will amount to 1,178 square metres.

First kilometres of the new airport railway completed

One of the most significant infrastructure projects being developed as part of preparations for the specialised international exhibition EXPO 2027 is the new railway line connecting central Belgrade, Nikola Tesla Airport and Surčin.

Along the 18.3-kilometre route, six major engineering structures are being constructed, including four bridges, a viaduct and an overpass, linking Zemun Polje with the National Stadium, the future centre of the EXPO complex.

Construction works and track installation are expected to be completed by the end of the year, after which the final phase of infrastructure and train testing will begin. Trains are expected to cover this section in just 15 to 20 minutes.

Nine new trains from China

Following the completion of construction works, several months of testing of both the route and the trains are scheduled to begin in February next year. Nine train sets have already been procured from China for the new line.

According to current plans, passengers will be able to travel from Prokop station to the EXPO complex and the National Stadium in around 30 minutes, while the journey between Zemun Polje and the National Stadium will take between 15 and 20 minutes.

Five stations and stops along the route

The new railway line will include two stations and three stops. The starting station will be Zemun Polje, which will provide the main connection to the Belgrade-Novi Sad high-speed railway.

The route will then continue through:

  • Singidunum stop near Dobanovci;
    • Nikola Tesla Airport stop, approximately 500 metres from Terminal 1 and connected by a pedestrian footbridge;
    • Surčin stop;
    • National Stadium station, which will serve as the EXPO complex terminus.

Under current plans, trains will operate every 30 minutes under normal conditions. During peak periods and throughout EXPO 2027, departures will be scheduled every 15 minutes.
