The Italian Ambassador to Serbia, Luca Gori, met yesterday with the Speaker of the Serbian National Assembly, Ana Brnabić.
The discussion focused on Serbia’s European integration and on ways to accelerate this process. In this context, the renewed commitment of the Serbian authorities to unblock the accession process was highlighted, also reaffirmed in the joint article by President Aleksandar Vučić and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama published in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, as well as the intention to open new negotiation clusters and chapters by the summer, also thanks to the work of the coordination unit chaired by Ambassador Danijel Apostolović.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to review the state of implementation of reforms, particularly those related to the recommendations of ODIHR and the strengthening of the rule of law. In this context, the work of the Commission on the unified electoral register, the process of appointing the Council of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM), and the preparation of the upcoming municipal elections scheduled for the end of March were examined.
Finally, the discussion highlighted the excellent state of bilateral relations, including parliamentary relations, as also confirmed by the recent visit to Rome for high-level institutional meetings by a delegation of the National Assembly belonging to the Serbia–Italy parliamentary friendship group.
“Italy and Serbia enjoy excellent relations which we aim to strengthen by making full use of all available instruments, including parliamentary diplomacy,” said the Italian Ambassador, Luca Gori. “Rome strongly supports Belgrade’s path towards EU membership,” Gori added, “and trusts in the commitment of the Serbian authorities to complete the reforms necessary to accelerate the process of European integration.”
