“Baryshnikov, Nureyev and Godunov all rolled into in a single dancer,” this is how the great Natalia Makarova described the currently best Russian ballet dancer, Denis Matvyenko, who will perform tonight and tomorrow at the Sava Centre in Belgrade.
Denis Matvyenko, with other dance stars of the Mariinsky and Mikhaylovski theatres in St. Petersburg, will perform in a gala concert tonight at 20:00 and tomorrow at 18:00 at the Sava Centre. The programme includes pieces from the most famous classical ballets, with music by Khachaturian, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky Adam, Grieg and Minkus, as well as pieces by contemporary choreographers.
Denis was born in Ukraine and is part of the third generation of a family of dancers. He performed at the National Opera in Ukraine, was the artistic director of the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre, and performed as a principal dancer in Tokyo, Moscow, Milan, Paris and New York. He is the only dancer to have won four major awards in international ballet competitions.
“I am a perfectionist in both my private and professional life. A multifunctional sociopath, as I like to say. The desire for perfection has always helped me. Working on yourself is a bottomless pit because excellence has no limits. You can always improve. That’s why I don’t like to look at myself in the recordings, I’m never completely satisfied,” he revealed in an interview.
