A photo taken in the recently opened Galerija Beograd shopping centre, a part of the Belgrade Waterfront development, spread like wildfire on social media. The photo shows a rat roaming the newly opened shopping centre along with shoppers.
The photo provoked an avalanche of comments including: “The rat is from the old regime“, „It was robbed of its territory”, “There is no money for rodent control”, “Djilas wrote this “…
The shopping centre was opened on Friday with shoppers coming as early as 10:00 am. Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, Prime Minister Ana Brnabić, Finance Minister Siniša Mali, and president of the Eagle Hills Company, Mohamed Alabbar attended its official opening.
“Very few people in Serbia believed in this project, and now it is the most beautiful thing in southeastern Europe. This is also the most beautiful riverside in Europe and the most beautiful avenues. Belgrade is becoming the capital of the entire region,” Vucic said at the opening.

“We transformed the whole area, which looked like a waste dump, into the most beautiful part of south-east Europe. Together with a handful of enthusiasts, including the Minister of Finance, Ana Brnabic and some representatives of the city we were a minority and were exposed to verbal attacks from all sides. Today, nobody has a bad word to say about it,” said the President of Serbia.
Shortly after the inauguration, photos of the parking lots of this shopping centre appeared on social media, showing that the construction work is far from being over, although the project was presented by the media as completed.
“When the cameras stop filming and Aleksandar Vucic ends his reality show, the construction workers and machines return to continue the work!” reads a tweet.
