The first anniversary of May mass shootings in Serbia

The first anniversary of the May 3, 2023 tragedy that took place at the Vladislav Ribnikar elementary school in Belgrade and in the village of Dubovna is commemorated today.

A year ago a thirteen-year-old boy gunned down nine students at the school – Ana Bozovic, Sofija Negic, Mara Andjelkovic, Andrija Cikic, Bojana Asovic, Angelina Acimovic, Ema Kobiljski, Katarina Martinovic, Adriana Dukic, and the school security guard, Dragan Vlahovic.

The program to commemorate the victims, titled “Awakening,” began on Friday morning outside the Vladislav Ribnikar School where the families, relatives and friends of the victims, and citizens will be able to lay flowers, light candles and write in the Book of Remembrance.

The Multidisciplinary Team for the establishment of a Memorial Centre for the Victims of the Mass Murder at the Vladislav Ribnikar Elementary School in Belgrade said the Commemorative Day marks the beginning of a multi-layered process of memorialization.

Also, on 4 May 2023, a shooting spree occurred in the villages of Dubona near Mladenovac and Malo Orašje near Smederevo. Armed with an automatic assault rifle, the shooter opened fire from a car, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals, including an off-duty police officer, and leaving twelve others injured. The suspect, 20-year-old Uroš Blažić, fled the scene but was apprehended the next day near Kragujevac.
