The 47th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, a historic event that radically transformed the political, social and cultural structure of the Iranian nation, was celebrated.
The celebration took place in the Serbian capital, with the participation of numerous members of the diplomatic corps, figures from political and Iranian cultural circles, as well as representatives of the media and accredited diplomatic missions in Belgrade.
The Islamic Revolution in Iran was a popular movement that took place between 1978 and 1979 and led to the fall of the monarchy under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and the establishment of the Islamic Republic, led by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. The revolution brought together very different sectors of Iranian society, including religious leaders, intellectuals, workers and students, united by the goal of ending the Shah’s autocracy and what was perceived as foreign interference in the country’s domestic affairs. At the beginning of 1979, the Shah left Iran and, returning from exile, Khomeini entered Tehran on 1 February 1979 before massive crowds; a few days later, on 11 February 1979, the armed forces declared their neutrality, marking the end of the Pahlavi monarchy and the definitive victory of the revolution.
“The Islamic Revolution in Iran was the manifestation of a nation’s will which, relying on its faith, historical identity and desire for independence, triumphed in 1979, embarking on a path based on independence, freedom, justice and the rejection of all forms of domination – a path that continues to this day. The Iranian people are still moving forward and, relying on their own capabilities and resources, have managed to develop and prosper, achieving significant results in numerous fields, both nationally and internationally,” stated the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran, H.E. Mohammad Sadegh Fazli.
The Iranian Ambassador also commented on the international situation and recent events, stating: “Last year was a year of highs and lows for the Islamic Republic of Iran. To demonstrate our goodwill, we initiated talks on nuclear issues; however, after five rounds of negotiations, the Zionist regime, with the participation of the United States, launched military aggression against Iran. Shortly thereafter, failing to achieve its objectives through military action, it turned peaceful protests that arose at the end of December 2025 over economic issues into armed terrorist unrest. This scenario, too, was thwarted. They have now returned to the negotiating table while simultaneously attempting to threaten and exert pressure through coordinated military, political and media campaigns. The Iranian Government, just as it will act seriously and decisively to defend its sovereignty and national security, also firmly employs diplomacy to safeguard the interests of the Iranian nation and protect regional peace and security. The fundamental principle of diplomacy is respect for national sovereignty and mutual interests: negotiations based on threats, intimidation and demands for unilateral and illegitimate concessions cannot be effective,” stated the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Belgrade.
Iran and Serbia, although located in different geographical regions, are two nations with rich and remarkable histories, sharing significant cultural and historical affinities. Both nations are home to ancient civilisations and a prestigious cultural heritage and, throughout history, have made sacrifices and shown resilience in order to preserve their independence, identity and national dignity. Iranians and Serbs are deeply committed to social values and the institution of the family; ethics, humanity and religious beliefs play a prominent role in the social fabric of both societies.
Finally, it was emphasised that relations between Iran and Serbia are on a stable and upward trajectory, based on an independent foreign policy and mutual respect for the sovereignty and national interests of both countries. “We have always explicitly supported the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia, in accordance with international law and the principles of friendly relations, and we believe that respect for international norms guarantees stability, development and sustainable cooperation,” concluded the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Serbia.
