The Assembly to debate no confidence in the Government of Serbia today

The National Assembly of Serbia is scheduled to convene today, with the opposition’s proposal for a vote of no confidence in the Government on the agenda. The Speaker of Parliament, Ana Brnabić, has called the first session of the regular spring sitting, beginning at 11:00 a.m.

The initiative for a vote of no confidence in the Government of Đura Macut was submitted by 62 opposition MPs, citing the case involving the removal of protected status from the General Staff complex and the criminal proceedings being conducted against the Minister of Culture, Nikola Selaković.

The proposal was submitted to the Assembly on 13 February and was signed by MPs from the People’s Movement of Serbia, the Party of Freedom and Justice, the Green-Left Front, Serbia Centre, We – The Strength of the People, the Ecological Uprising, the Movement of Free Citizens, and others.

Under the Assembly’s Rules of Procedure, the spring sitting of Parliament begins on the first working Tuesday in March; however, no sessions had been scheduled since then. Opposition MPs assessed that sessions were not convened because the authorities did not wish criticism and opposition voices to be heard in Parliament ahead of the regular local elections, which were held on 29 March in 10 cities and municipalities.

As stipulated in Article 130 of the Constitution, a vote of no confidence in the Government or in an individual member of the Government may be requested by at least 60 MPs.

The National Assembly considers such a proposal at its next session, but no earlier than five days after the proposal has been submitted.

Following the conclusion of the debate, a vote is held on the proposal, and for it to be adopted, it must receive the support of more than half of all MPs.

If the National Assembly passes a vote of no confidence in the Government, the President of the Republic is obliged to initiate the procedure for the election of a new Government. If the Assembly fails to elect a new Government within 30 days of the vote of no confidence, the President must dissolve the National Assembly and call elections.

If a vote of no confidence is not passed against the Government or a member of the Government, the signatories of the proposal may not submit a new motion for a vote of no confidence for a period of 180 days.
