Thaci: I’ll resign if Kosovo Parliament does not approve of agreement with Serbia

Kosovo’s President Hashim Thaci said on Tuesday he would resign and call a referendum in case the Kosovo Parliament did not adopt an agreement with Belgrade, the KoSSev website reported.

Thaci said the agreement might include the annexation of Serbia’ southern region of Presevo Valley with three municipalities in two of which local Albanians are a majority.

He said that Kosovo would not have to give a part of its territory in return and that the move would not violate the constitution, but would only change it.

Kosovo’s President said he was sure the referendum would be in favour of such deal since over 75 per cent of Kosovo’s people supports the annexation of Bujanovac, Presevo and Medvedja.

He added that 99 per cent of the population in Presevo Valley support the annexation.

However, the Serbs are a majority in Medvedja making up 86.4 per cent of the population according to the 2011 census, with 7.1 per cent of the Albanians.

Furthermore, according to the statements of officials and citizens of the Presevo Valley, they have no desire to unite with Kosovo if it means a division of Kosovo. Thaci denied that the agreement could involve renouncing a part of the territory of Kosovo.

The idea of border changes or the territory swap has been circulating for some time. A German paper said it was agreed that a few Serbia’s villages would join Kosovo while a new borderline would be drawn between Serbia and northern Kosovo with a Serb majority and that the agreement would be signed in Washington on June 12.

Earlier, Thaci said Kosovo’s hostility to Serbia should not imperil its relations with the US, referring to the import tariffs imposed on goods from Serbia and Bosnia last November and Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj’s rejection to revoke the decision despite increasing pressure from the US and the European Union.

“Let’s not think of ourselves as the epicentre of the world. Where would we be without the support of the United States?!” Thaci said.
