Tepic: Serbian police are being privatized and criminalized

The Party of Freedom and Justice is critical of the Draft Law on Internal Affairs, said today the vice president of that party, Marinika Tepic.

She claims that the draft law leaves room for many instances of misuse and that passing such a law would enable the legalization of nepotism, para-police and criminalization of the police, adding that it is one of the most scandalous laws in the legislation of the Republic of Serbia and serves to make the police an instrument in the governing party’s hands.

“The law formally legalizes the privatization of the police, police brutality, para-police and criminalization of the police, and if adopted, criminals will be able to finance and sponsor the police, all for the sake of staying in power,” Tepic said at a press conference at the party’s headquarters.

She added that the militarization of the police creates a problem, because for the first time after the 1990s and the reign of Slobodan Milosevic, military ranks are introduced in the police, and it is disputable that, while the number of ECTS points for the appointment of the director of police will be reduced from the current 300 to 240.

“The huge financial penalties for those who publish pictures of an official while they are on duty are especially disturbing,” Tepic concluded.
