Students participating in the blockade of the Faculty of Medicine stated on social media that, according to the information at their disposal, independent candidates won in several cities in yesterday’s elections for the Serbian Medical Chamber and the Regional Medical Chamber of Vojvodina – namely in Belgrade, Kraljevo, Valjevo, Požarevac, Sombor, Smederevo and Subotica.
“In Belgrade, all independent candidates who stood for election have won; we are only still awaiting results from Obrenovac. Another victory this week… We congratulate all doctors who today took the first step towards restoring dignity to the medical profession,” one of the posts reads.
The students also claim that in Novi Sad, independent candidates secured a majority of votes for both the national and the regional medical chambers.
“Votes in Novi Sad have been counted. Independent candidates have won a majority for the Serbian Medical Chamber and the Regional Medical Chamber of Vojvodina. Despite what they describe as a ten-hour vote count, the removal of doctors from the electoral register, and various pressures, other candidates were nowhere near that result. The Medical Chamber is free,” the students stated.
It is also noted that independent candidates for the Serbian Medical Chamber did not win in Kragujevac.
To recall, elections for the Assembly of the Serbian Medical Chamber (LCS) and the Assembly of the Regional Medical Chamber of Vojvodina (LCV) were held yesterday in Novi Sad.
The most significant irregularity recorded, according to Ilija Srdanović, a professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Novi Sad, was that some doctors were prevented from voting on the grounds that they were not on the electoral register.
“Anyone not on the electoral register – even though they have worked for years and paid membership fees to the Serbian Medical Chamber – was not allowed to vote,” Srdanović said. He added that this issue could not be resolved on election day, which is why data are now being collected on all those who were prevented from voting.
Doctors in Novi Sad are voting for seven members of the Assembly of the Serbian Medical Chamber and 11 members of the Assembly of the Regional Medical Chamber of Vojvodina, and a large crowd is currently noticeable at the polling station at the LCV headquarters on Mihajlo Pupin Boulevard.
