Student protest under the slogan “Knowledge is power”

University students staged a protest in Belgrade yesterday, on the occasion of Saint Sava Day, dedicated to education, under the slogan “Knowledge is power”.

The gathering began at 6 p.m. in front of the Rectorate building in Students’ Square, and then continued with a march to the Temple of Saint Sava. Traffic in that part of the city was suspended, but there was no visible police presence.

Those who addressed the protest included the Rector of the University of Belgrade, Vladan Đokić; in addition to him, speeches were given by Maja Zorić, a student at the Faculty of Education Sciences, Maša Samardžić, a student at the Belgrade Grammar School, and the actress Anita Mančić.

When the procession reached the Temple of Saint Sava, participants observed 16 minutes of silence and lit candles. The protest then came to an end.

In a video and an appeal shared on Instagram, the students stated that it is “time for faith and competence to return to education and to be placed as the foundation of Serbian society”. They also stressed that “without knowledge there is no freedom, without justice there is no state, and without responsibility there is no community”.

At the end of the protest “Knowledge is power”, the students announced a new gathering, scheduled to take place on Sretenje in Šumadija.
