Sjenica cheese nominated for UNESCO intangible heritage list

The municipality of Sjenica, located in Southwestern Serbia, has nominated the technology involved in preparing the famous Sjenica cottage cheese for the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list.

“The benefits of appearing on the UNESCO list are numerous. Firstly, it is a way of preventing this product from disappearing and drowning in the sea of industrial,  low-quality cheeses, it prevents misuse, and it promotes exclusivity and quality which could also boost the agricultural and tourism capacity of the Sjenica region”, says Sjenica Assistant Mayor Mustafa Baltic.

The nomination was prepared by the municipality in cooperation with the Institute of Ethnography in Belgrade, and the whole process will be monitored by the Regional Center for Agricultural and Rural Development.

The nomination is expected to come under review in December 2016.
