Serbian scientists developing antigen coronavirus test kit

The laboratories of the Faculty of Chemistry in Belgrade will have developed a prototype antigen test kit for detecting COVID-19 infection by the year-end.

This was confirmed to Tanjug news agency by Professor Tanja Ćirković Veličković of the Department of Biochemistry, who said that their antigen test would be very similar to the PCR test.

The antibody count test is already produced by the Institute for Nuclear Energy Application (INEP), but with proteins procured from abroad. The test kit developed by the Faculty of Chemistry will be based on proteins produced in the Faculty’s laboratories.

Professor Tanja Ćirković Veličković expects the prototype to be improved next year. As she pointed out earlier, the advantage of antigen test kits is that results are obtained more quickly because these tests are simpler, but also cheaper to produce.
