Serbian MPs debate motion of no confidence in Djuro Macut’s government

Members of the Serbian Parliament will debate a motion of no confidence in the Serbian Government starting today at 10:00 am, which will be the sole item on the agenda.

The request for an extraordinary session to debate the vote of no confidence was submitted by 109 MPs.

In February, 62 opposition MPs submitted a motion for a vote of no confidence over the General Staff affair. However, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ana Brnabić, scheduled the session on this agenda item only for 15 April – more than two months after the proposal was submitted.

MPs from the ruling majority repeatedly refused to provide a quorum for the session to take place. Following the new scheduling of the session, the Speaker stated that the opposition “did not have enough MPs” for the debate, leading members of the ruling coalition to add their signatures as well.

Until the session on the motion of no confidence in the Government is concluded, extraordinary parliamentary elections cannot be called.

If Parliament rejects the no-confidence motion, the Government will continue its mandate and will be legally able to submit its resignation to the President of the Republic immediately.

If Parliament passes the motion of no confidence, or if Prime Minister Djuro Macut resigns on his own, a 30-day clock will start ticking during which a new Government must be formed. If this fails to happen, Parliament will be dissolved and elections called.

The parliamentary election campaign cannot last less than 45 or more than 60 days, and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has announced that parliamentary elections will be held in October or November.
