Serbian government wants to sell its sonic weapons

Interior Minister Ivica Dačić has once again denied allegations regarding the use of a “long-range acoustic device” (LRAD) during protests in Belgrade, adding that Serbia is even ready to sell these devices.

“These are devices with two modes. One serves to issue a warning over a greater distance at a higher volume-for example, that a gathering has not been registered or that people should disperse-while the other emits high-pitched, pulsating sounds designed to disperse crowds. In our country, this second function is not permitted, and as for our devices, they have never been used even in the first function as a public address system, although they were legally acquired years ago,” Dačić stated.

Appearing on Radio Belgrade, Dačić stressed that the claims about the use of an LRAD were a complete lie.

“Following all the media reports, I technically disabled the possibility for that second mode to be used at all, and we are also ready to sell them,” Dačić said.

He also addressed the case of military analyst Aleksandar Radić, who has been remanded in custody and for whom an arrest warrant has been issued due to his public statements regarding the use of the acoustic device.

“I have no information on his whereabouts, but he is not in Serbia-everyone has seen that. It is obvious that there are certain countries that have become a haven for those who break the law in Serbia. The police do not classify the offence; they collect evidence and submit it, while it is the prosecutor who determines the classification,” Dačić explained.

As a reminder, the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office (VJT) in Belgrade announced on Friday, 19 June, that it suspected students of “planning a simulation of an acoustic device” during the protest on 15 March. It added that it had ordered the collection of information regarding the matter, as well as interviews with everyone who had publicly asserted that an acoustic device was used against protest participants.

In connection with this, on Monday, 22 June, the flat of military analyst Aleksandar Radić was searched. Additionally, lawyer and Vice-President of LSV – Vojvodinians, Aleksandar Olenik, was summoned to the Criminal Police Directorate (UKP) for an interview, which took place on 24 June. The Editor-in-Chief of the Srbin.info portal, Dejan Zlatanović, was interviewed on 23 June. Furthermore, the Editor-in-Chief of the Beta news agency, Vojkan Kostić, was summoned by the police after meeting Radić to interview him on the day of the search. He was called to the UKP “on suspicion of preparing an offence against the constitutional order and security of Serbia”. On 1 July, Zdravko Ponoš, President of the Serbia Centre (SRCE) party, was also summoned.

On 17 July, the VJT in Belgrade announced that criminal charges had been filed against Radić and recommended detention on the grounds that “the suspect left the territory of the Republic of Serbia on 24 June 2026” and is currently “a fugitive”.
