Serbia to join CERN by the end of September

The procedure pertaining to finalizing Serbia’s full-fledged membership in the European Organization for Nuclear Research (known as CERN) will have been completed by the end of September – the Politika daily learns.

Hence, at the end of September, Serbia could become a full member of the CERN.

This is good news and the reason why Prime Minister Ana Brnabic visited this scientific institution at the beginning of the week since it gathers almost all countries in the world and is the leader in science, the development of cutting-edge technologies and computing.

Professor Petar Adzic, the president of the Serbian Commission for Cooperation with the CERN and the representative of Serbia in the CERN Council, says there are two important reasons for the Prime Minister’s visit – finalizing the membership procedure for Serbia and signing an agreement stipulating physics teachers, from Serbian elementary and high schools, receiving training at the CERN.

“The Serbian state delegation visiting the CERN is probably one of the highest-level visits so far, because I do not know that any official delegation of a member state that had the prime minister, the line minister and two state secretaries visiting the CERN at the same time,” says Professor Adzic.

Adzic adds that Serbia will be the first of the former ex-Yugoslav republics to become a full-fledged member of the CERN.

“Slovenia will likely join in four years’ time, while Croatia is preparing its membership this year. Serbia will be one of the very few members of the CERN which is not an EU member, apart from Switzerland, Norway and Israel. Otherwise, CERN’s budget is predominantly provided by EU countries, and back in the day, almost 85 per cent of the budget came from EU countries,” says Professor Adzic for the Politika daily.
