Serbia to get four new transport corridors

Serbia is currently undergoing a strong investment drive focused on the construction and modernisation of transport infrastructure.

The development of the motorway and dual carriageway network not only makes journeys more comfortable, but fundamentally alters the geostrategic and economic position of numerous towns and municipalities across the country.

Vožd Karađorđe: The new lifeblood of Šumadija and central Serbia

The Vožd Karađorđe dual carriageway has been designed to connect central Serbia with the eastern and western parts of the country, as well as to link the E-75 and E-763 (Miloš the Great) motorways. This strategic route will encompass numerous municipalities and towns along its path.

  • Key towns and municipalities on the route: The project directly covers the territories of Sopot, Mladenovac, Lazarevac, Aranđelovac, Topola, Rača, Lapovo, Velika Plana, Svilajnac, Despotovac and Bor.
  • Key hubs: The central point and intersection of multiple routes will be the Orašac interchange, which will connect routes towards Mali Požarevac, the E-75 motorway (Markovac West), the Miloš the Great motorway (Čibutkovica West) and Aranđelovac.

This route will drastically bring Šumadija closer to the capital, cutting travel time from central Belgrade to Mladenovac to 35 minutes, and to Aranđelovac to a maximum of 45 minutes, with completion expected within 3 years. Additionally, plans include connecting a section towards Kragujevac.

Morava Corridor: Connecting half a million people in the West Morava Valley

Serbia’s first digital 5G motorway, the Morava Corridor, represents an absolute turning point as it physically and functionally connects Corridor 10 (near Pojate) and the “Miloš the Great” motorway (near Preljina). The route integrates an area inhabited by more than 500,000 people.

  • Towns on the route: The motorway passes directly through the most important centres of the Morava region: Čačak, Kraljevo, Vrnjačka Banja, Trstenik, Kruševac, Stalać and Ćićevac.
  • New geostrategic status: Through this project, the city of Čačak gains the privilege of connecting to its third motorway, definitively confirming its status as one of the most important transport hubs in Serbia. On the other hand, Kraljevo gets its first direct link to the national motorway network, which will incomparably better connect the city with the western part of the route.

Danube Corridor: Revitalisation and rebirth for eastern Serbia

The Danube Corridor is a dual carriageway of vital importance that will fundamentally change the standard of living and economy of eastern Serbia, while creating conditions for the diaspora to return.

  • First phase of connectivity: The corridor strategically links Požarevac, Veliko Gradište and Golubac with Belgrade and Corridor 10 (via the “Požarevac” interchange). Travel time from Belgrade to Veliko Gradište will be under an hour, and to Golubac around 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 20 minutes.
  • Continuation of the route towards Kladovo and Bor: The state’s strategic plan is to extend construction from Golubac towards Brza Palanka. This extension will permanently resolve transport issues in the future and connect Kladovo, Negotin, Majdanpek and Bor. Once the route is completed, travel from Kladovo to Belgrade will take less than two hours.

Smile of Vojvodina: A fast link from Hungary to Romania

This impressive 185-kilometre corridor will connect the western and eastern parts of Vojvodina, running from the border crossing with Hungary (Bački Breg) to the border with Romania (Nakovo and Srpska Crnja).

  • Towns on the main route: The route is designed to pass through the territories of Sombor, Kula, Vrbas, Srbobran, Bečej, Novi Bečej and Kikinda. In addition to these towns, the route will provide access roads and bypass settlements such as Sivac, Crvenka, Radičević, Novo Miloševo and Bočar.
  • Access branches for additional networking: Alongside the main route, key access corridors are also being designed. The Kula-Bogojevo route will provide a direct connection from Apatin and Odžaci (alongside Bogojevo Port) to Sombor, Kula, Vrbas and Srbobran. The Bašaid-Srpska Crnja section will connect the corridor with middle Banat, benefiting Nova Crnja, Kikinda, Žitište and Zrenjanin enormously.
  • Connectivity: The connectivity of these towns will bring drastic time savings. Travel from Novi Sad to Sombor will take around an hour, and from Sombor to Kikinda just 90 minutes.
