As of December 1st, 2023, the level of permitted aflatoxin in milk, according to the regulations that are in force, was supposed to drop from 0.25 to 0.05 micrograms per kilogramme (not litre), which is the maximum level in the EU.
However, only eight days later, on December 9, a new rulebook came into force that states the limit will be lowered at the end of November 2024.
Last year, the rulebook that, among other things, regulates the amount of aflatoxin allowed in milk was amended in time – at the end of November, just before the deadline for passing the threshold requirement of 0.05 micrograms per kilogram of milk.
So instead of drinking milk with less aflatoxin from December 1, 2022, that deadline has been moved to December 1, 2023.
This year, it seems, aflatoxin was forgotten. So the already amended rulebook was amended again at the Government session on December 7, so that the amendment would come into force from Saturday, December 9.
According to the new Rulebook on maximum concentrations of certain contaminants in food, the return of the limit of this carcinogenic substance to the maximum level allowed in the EU is postponed until December 1, 2024.
Aflatoxin enters milk through maize, which is used as a component of animal feed – it is “produced” by mould. That is why one of the key issues for having as low level of aflatoxin as possible is to enable adequate drying of maize before storage.
