Serbia ranks 52nd among the countries with the biggest AI potential

The past decade has seen an accelerated development of artificial intelligence globally.

In recent years, companies around the world are increasingly realising the benefits of commercial application in artificial intelligence research and development. According to the AI Readiness Index for 2021, which ranks 160 countries, Serbia occupies 52nd place.

Serbia was the first in the Balkan region to adopt a National Artificial Intelligence Development Strategy for the period from 2020 to 2025, and the Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Institute of Serbia was the first such institute to be formed in Serbia and the region.

Artificial intelligence research and development worldwide is growing exponentially, and in the words of the deputy director of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia, Dubravko Ćulibrk, there are numerous possibilities for the application of artificial intelligence in Serbia as well.

“When it comes to research, the biggest challenge is how to create an ecosystem and conditions within our country that will lead to a truly world-class level of excellence. Currently, there are individuals and teams that have potential, as well as a large number of our scientists abroad that have reached that level, but this is more the exception than the norm,’ says Ćulibrk.

He adds that, when it comes to the application of artificial intelligence, “globally speaking, it is difficult to incorporate this technology into existing systems and help decision-makers see the potential it brings. This is only possible through education and joint work between academia and industry.”

“Furthermore, any application (of AI) in public administration or healthcare, which can bring a great direct benefit to citizens, needs to be carefully regulated and thought through,” Dubravko Ćulibrk underlines and adds that “when a research idea becomes a practical innovation that translates into a more profitable business and the improvement of public services and society in general, then the scientific discovery gets its true value”.
