Serbia has aligned itself with two decisions of the European Union (EU) on restrictive measures in response to Russia’s unlawful recognition, occupation or annexation of certain areas of Ukraine not under government control, as well as measures targeting certain individuals, entities and bodies in light of the situation in Ukraine.
This is stated in a declaration by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, published by the Council of the EU.
The decision relating to individuals, entities and bodies in connection with the situation in Ukraine dates back to March 2014 and concerns the freezing of assets and travel bans for individuals and entities responsible for undermining the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine, and applies to the territories of Donetsk and Luhansk. These measures are extended annually, and accordingly the EU has decided to prolong them for an additional year.
The second sanction with which Serbia has aligned itself is linked to the decision of 23 February 2022, the day before the start of the war in Ukraine, and concerns restrictive measures against certain individuals, entities and bodies in connection with the situation in Ukraine. These measures have also been extended for one year, that is, until 2027, in accordance with the EU decision.
All countries in the region holding candidate status for EU membership have aligned themselves with these decisions.
“They will ensure that their national policies conform to this Council decision. The European Union takes note of this commitment and welcomes it,” said the head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas.
Prior to this confirmation, Serbia’s level of alignment with European Union sanctions stood at 65 per cent.
Serbia has so far not aligned itself with any decisions on sanctions against Russia over the war in Ukraine.
