From 15 July 2026, rail fares in Serbia’s domestic passenger rail network will increase by an average of around 10 per cent, according to announced changes to the fare policy.
Under the new pricing structure, the standard fare per passenger kilometre by distance zone will be:
- 1–120 kilometres: 5.1 dinars per kilometre in second class (7.6 dinars in first class)
- 121–320 kilometres: 4.4 dinars per kilometre in second class (6.6 dinars in first class)
- 321 kilometres and above: 4.1 dinars per kilometre in second class (6.2 dinars in first class)
This maintains the degressive pricing system, meaning that passengers travelling longer distances will continue to pay a lower rate per kilometre, helping to keep rail travel affordable and preserve the competitiveness of railway transport.
The fare increase is intended to support further improvements in passenger rail services through the modernisation of the ticket sales network, enhanced passenger comfort through the acquisition of new rolling stock, and infrastructure investments, including the construction of technical and passenger service facilities.
In addition to ticket offices and onboard ticket purchases, passengers can buy tickets through digital sales channels, including ticket vending machines, the website, and the mobile application. Purchasing tickets online will remain the most economical option, as it provides a 5 per cent discount on the ticket price.
The 500-dinar onboard purchase fee will remain in place for passengers who could have bought a ticket at a station equipped with a ticket office or vending machine but failed to do so before boarding the train.
The same fee also applies when a passenger attempts to use a return ticket on the wrong train or on an incorrect travel date. As emphasised in the announcement, this fee is not considered a penalty but rather a measure designed to facilitate capacity management and assist conductors in their work.
The increase will also apply to season tickets, including weekly, fortnightly, and monthly passes.
However, the prices of annual passes, seat reservations, and the transport of luggage and bicycles will remain unchanged.
Passengers who purchase tickets in advance before 15 July 2026 will be able to use the current fares even for journeys taking place after that date.
