The investigation into the killing at Restaurant 27 in the Senjak district of Belgrade, and the possible involvement of Veselin Milić, has long been compromised, making it unlikely that justice will be served. This is the view of prosecutor Radovan Lazić, speaking to the latest issue of Vreme magazine.
Criminal complaints have been withdrawn, legal classifications altered, and there are suspicions of obstruction. Radovan Lazić, a prosecutor at the Appellate Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad, believes that the Senjak murder case has already been so heavily “contaminated” that there is little reason for optimism.
Lazić, a former member of the State Prosecutorial Council, made these remarks in the cover interview of the latest issue of Vreme. He criticised the actions of the Higher Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade, while acknowledging one mitigating circumstance: “One of the suspects is a senior police official. If he was involved in the incident and if the allegations contained in the criminal complaint are accurate, we can only speculate about the extent of the obstruction that may have existed within the police force. All investigative actions were undertaken with considerable delay, which, of course, made the proceedings even more difficult.”
Vučić’s interference is ‘unacceptable’
Regarding the public statements made by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, who disclosed details of the investigation and commented on its legal classification, Lazić said that this “certainly constitutes a violation of the law”.
“But even if it did not, such conduct would, at the very least, amount to contamination of the investigation. It is unacceptable for a public official, or any other person with no authority in criminal proceedings, to disclose information about actions that have been taken, findings obtained up to that point, and evidence gathered during the investigative and pre-investigative stages,” he added.
Taking all of this into account, Lazić believes the case has been “seriously contaminated” and that “it is difficult to expect these proceedings to conclude in a way that would allow us to say that justice has truly been served in the end”.
