Promotion of wines from Southern Italy in Serbia

The Italian Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE), and its Belgrade office, held a MasterClass in tasting of selected wines from the Southern Italian regions of Calabria, Campania, Puglia and Sicily at the Hyatt Regency Hotel yesterday.

The MasterClass, held by the Italian wine expert Barbara Tamburini, was attended by over 60 renowned sommeliers and the representatives of specialized media from the Balkans. Its goal was to introduce the wine making areas and indigenous varieties that make up the unique and extensive wine making heritage of Southern Italy.

Apart from the sommeliers and specialized media from Serbia, the event was also attended by the professionals from the wine industries of Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Kosovo.

ICE is known for their presentations of the Made in Italy products which had already taken place in Belgrade and Serbia, including the Novi Sad Agricultural Fair.

“This MasterClass marks the beginning of the promotion of the wines from Southern Italy with the main event being the Wine Fair that will take place on 21st February next year. On the occasion, we will have many wine makers from the Southern Italian regions of Calabria, Campania, Puglia and Sicily, who are involved in the Export Sud project, coming here, as well as many business people from all Balkan countries. Until this happens, we are going to carry out many activities on presenting the exceptional variety and uniqueness of the wine making tradition in the four mentioned southern regions, in cooperation with the most important wine distributors and restaurant owners in Serbia”, says Giovanni Mafodda, Director of ICE’s office in Belgrade.

For a number of years, Italy has been the biggest wine producer in the world and it has been estimated that, in 2016, the country will have produced 48.5 million hectoliters of wine.

The Deputy Ambassador of the Italian Embassy in Belgrade, Sergio Monti also announced the first ever “The Italian Cuisine Week” taking place between 21st and 27th November. The aim of this initiative is to valorize the Italian culinary tradition abroad as one of the biggest Italian brands.
