Profile of the typical foreign tourist in Serbia

The average foreign tourist in Serbia is 41 years old, has a job or is a small business owner, travels alone or accompanied by one person, has visited Serbia more than three times or for the first time, and spent a total of five nights in the country, spending 90 Euro per day. These are the results of the project conducted by the State Statistical Office (RZS).

This is the first research that has been done in the past 15 years to collect data on foreign tourists in Serbia, on the basis of which the future tourism strategy will be developed. The research was conducted in 2021, on 5,000 people and is part of the project ‘Developing an efficient and sustainable statistical system in accordance with the European statistical system’. The project is worth EUR 1.2 million and is fully funded by the EU.

According to the results, 60 per cent of foreign tourists who visited Serbia in 2021 were between 25 and 44 years old, 64 per cent of them had already been to Serbia, while 36 per cent were those who were in Serbia for the first time. As the survey was conducted during the pandemic, it was important to determine whether COVID-19 had influenced tourists’ decision to visit Serbia.

The majority of survey respondents – 72% – underlined that the pandemic had had no impact on their decision, while only 15% said they had not planned a trip to Serbia before.

What do foreign tourists like to do while in Serbia? Going to restaurants! As many as 3/4 of the respondents marked dining as their favourite activity while in Serbia, followed by sightseeing, shopping and nightlife.
