Prices up, purchasing power down

The average consumer basket in February this year, which was the last statistically processed and published on the website of the Ministry of Internal and External Trade, amounted to 102,480.77 dinars and was 5.9 percent higher than the value of the consumer basket in February 2023.

When it comes to the minimum consumer basket, its value amounted to 53,040.56 dinars in February this year, which is 5.4 percent more than the minimum basket in February 2023.

1.09 average salaries were needed to cover the average consumer basket in February and 0.56 average earnings to cover the minimum consumer basket. A year earlier, 1.19 average salaries were needed to cover the average consumer basket, and 0.62 average salaries to cover the minimum basket.

Compared to the same month of the previous year, the average gross salary in February 2024 was nominally higher by 15.8 percent, i.e. by 9.7 percent in real terms, while the average net salary is nominally higher by 15.7 and in real terms by 9.6 percent.

Compared to a year ago, consumer prices in February went up by 5.6 percent, and as far as purchasing power is concerned, the data show that only residents of Belgrade, Kragujevac, Niš and Novi Sad had a purchasing power above the national average. In other cities, which are also statistically monitored, the average net salary covered the minimum consumer basket, but was not enough to cover the average consumer basket.
