Preparations for the launch of production of a new electric vehicle at the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Srbija (FCA Srbija) factory in Kragujevac are proceeding as planned – says the president of the factory’s trade union, Sasa Djordjević.
“There are strong indicators that we are moving towards the established goal, i.e. that everything will be ready for production in the third quarter of 2024. Everything is taking place according to the planned dynamics,” he added.
None of the employees wanted to reveal details about the equipment arriving in Kragujevac, because they are contractually obligated to protect this information. A contingent of new equipment arrived in April, and these were robots intended for the production of electric cars. In the following period, the equipment will arrive successively, according to the established installation plan.
According to Djordjević, a trial run will be carried out before mass production begins. The vehicle, he adds, must pass all checks, including safety, and complete testing. Djordjevic also says that the employees do not yet know which model will be produced in Kragujevac, and adds that that is a common business practice in the automotive industry.
The public first speculated that the Kragujevac factory would produce an electric Fiat Panda, but unofficially, it could be even the new Citroen C3.
According to the plan, 500 workers are now working in the factory and all of them are regularly engaged. According to the contract on the electric car production, signed by the Serbian government and Stellantis (the group under which Fiat operates), the employment of another 1,000 people is foreseen. As Djordjević states, they are probably going to be employed successively, as the scope of work increases.
