Plan for opening a lithium mine in Loznica annulled

In an emergency session, the Loznica Town Council cancelled the decision on the adoption of the city’s new spatial plan, which envisaged Rio Tinto opening a lithium mine there.

The 46 government representatives voted in favour of the proposal for a new urban plan, while the opposition councilors, made up of the Citizens’ Group Smelo and members of the Serbian Radical Party (SRS), left the session shortly before the vote. The reason why they left was the decision for the vote to take place without a previous debate.

The previously adopted plan envisaged the construction of Rio Tinto’s lithium mine called Jadar.

Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vučić had announced on Tuesday that Loznica will abolish the territorial plan that envisages the construction of a lithium mine.

“I think that tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, the Loznica Town Council will make a decision on the abolition of the adopted spatial plan, so from now on we will have a different approach to Rio Tinto and similar companies,” Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said on Tuesday.
