The vice-president of the Democratic Party (DS) and the mayor of Paracin, Sasa Paunovic, will resign from his party and participate in local elections in the city, writes Danas daily.
Sources close to Paunovic say he will not wait for the DS to expel him because of his decision to take part in the local election, which would put his current party in an embarrassing situation.
Paunovic is ready for the move if the DS decides to approve the election boycott, which would prohibit the Paracin branch of the DS to take part in the local elections. A large number of members of the DS presidency have not yet decided how to vote.

The President of the DS has recently said that the party’s presidency, instead of the main committee, will decide on the Paracin branch office’s proposal to vote in the local election.
The DS, which is a member of the Alliance for Serbia (Savez za Srbiju – SzS), has decided not to stand in the next elections, while the local DS branch, led by Paunovic, has asked the party leadership to exempt Paunovic from the boycott as he would participate in the election by himself, not as a DS member.
To remind, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, said that he will decide on the date of the parliamentary elections on March 4, and that the state and local elections will take place on the same day.
