The legend about Don Giovanni, who enjoyed enormous popularity among the ladies of his time, will connect the artists of the East and the West under the unusual direction of Aleksandar Nikolic.
In the new version of Mozart’s opera, Don Giovanni, which will be performed on July 28 and 29 in Belgrade’s Kombank Dvorana, the main roles will be given to the artists from China and Serbia, and while maestro Gregory Buchalter from the New York Metropolitan Opera will conduct the Stanislav Binicki Ensemble.
“The director has very creative ideas, some very different from my own, but the point of cooperation is not to reject the other’s idea at first hearing, but to try and execute it and then accept or compromise it,” Buchalter said. “I am pleased to have the opportunity to cooperate for the first time with major artists from Serbia and China. Although, this is the fifth time in my career that I am conducting Mozart’s “happy drama” in Belgrade, I will certainly do my best to make the audience feel comfortable”, he added.
The main roles were given to baritone Vladimir Andrić and Jasmina Trumbetaš Petrović, the star of the Belgrade opera, while the soprano Vanessa Zhang from China will play Donna Anna.
The Don Giovanni opera stands side by side with the masterpieces of Mozart, such as The Marriage of Figaro, The Magic Flute and Cosi Fan Tutte, and its generally considered a matter of prestige for any theatre to stage at least one masterpiece of the child prodigy from Salzburg.
