Nišville Jazz Festival from 13 to 16 August

Around 1,000 performers will take part in nearly 300 events at the 32nd Nišville Jazz Festival, which will take place from 13 to 16 August at the Niš Fortress. This year’s edition will be expanded to include a fourth festival evening dedicated to the Niš rock scene, it was announced today at a press conference at the Artget Gallery of the Belgrade Cultural Centre.

Festival Director Ivan Blagojević stated that, despite organizational challenges, Nišville will once again bring together a large number of artists this year and maintain the scope of its main programme.

“We will organize close to 1,000 performers across nearly 300 events, and we expect a similar turnout to previous years. We have slightly scaled back the side events, but the main programme will run for four days,” said Blagojević.

Blagojević highlighted that among this year’s participants, the most prominent name will be the Cuban-American clarinettist and saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera, a 16-time Grammy Award winner and, as he noted, the only musician to have won recognition from the Recording Academy across three categories: jazz, Latin jazz, and classical music.

Three traditional awards will be presented during the festival: the main Lifetime Achievement Award, the Nišville Grand Prix, and an award for contributions to jazz.

Alongside the main programme, Nišville will offer theatrical, film, literary, and visual arts events, as well as “Jazz for Kids” activities, comics, and caricatures.

Musician Dragan Ristić from the band KAL said their performance would be dedicated to marking the 90th anniversary of the birth of Šaban Bajramović, whom he described as one of the most recognizable figures in Serbian and Romani musical heritage.

The organizers announced that the fourth evening of the festival, on 16 August, will be dedicated to more than six decades of the Niš rock scene, featuring performances by Daltoni, Galija, Bohemia, and Lavina.

The main festival stage will feature, among others, the Vlatko Stefanovski Trio, Incognito, KAL and Zejna, the Paquito D’Rivera Trio, Del Arno Band, Boney M, Kyoto Jazz Massive, The Amy Winehouse Band, and Dock In Absolute.

Following the presentation of this year’s festival programme, the jazz fusion ensemble The Jazz Satellites – one of the acts performing at this year’s Nišville – performed on the plateau in front of the Belgrade Cultural Centre, Tanjug reports.
